About Brighton There are probably few people in the country that haven't heard of Brighton as it is one of the UK nations most favourite seaside towns. It is famous for its piers (now just a single pier) and its pebbly beacjes. It's a bit like Blackpool but less tacky! Brighton has a long history and the settlement predates the Domesday Book. Brighton's humble beginnings however started to move forward when the Saxons conquered Sussex in the 5th C. AD. One of theses Saxons was called Beorthelm and it is thought by some scholars that the name Brighton evolved from this Saxon name. Brighton continued to develope throughout the middle ages despite suffering from coastal erosion which swallowed a great deal of farmland. At this time there were no sea defences to hold back the erosion of the beaches which unchecked would be swept Eastwards towards Kent and the North Sea. The town was attacked and burned down by the French during the 17th century however unsuprisingly it was rebuilt thanks to the wooden construction of many of its buildings and began to flourish afterwards with a thriving fishing industry. The 18th century really saw Brighton take off and in 1787 the most famous building in Brighton, the Pavillion, was built for the first time. During the 19th C. further expansion occurred and in 1841 a railway to London opened which made it much easier for visitors to reach Brighton. By 1848 it was estimated that quarter of a million people were visiting Brighton each year. It was during this period that West Pier was built in 1866 and nearly 30 years later Palace Pier was constructed in 1899. During the Second World War Brighton suffered heavy damage with 56 air raids causing over 5,000 houses to be damaged or destroyed. Brighton and Hove gained it's city status in 2000. In December 2002 West Pier (The West Pier is one of only two Grade I listed piers in the United Kingdom, but suffered two fires in 2003) partly collapsed when severe weather hit Brighton. Brighton's other pier, the Palace Pier (originally and in full "The Brighton Marine Palace and Pier", and for long known as the Palace Pier) continues to be a major tourist attraction.
